YOU(TH) FOR YOU(TH)

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The right to basic education is enshrined in South Africa’s Constitution. This means that every single person in this country, no matter your background, has a right to go to school.

But it should not only be about the right to go to school, but the right to quality education in a safe environment. Unfortunately this is not the reality for every child in South Africa. The country’s education system is still broken and unequal.

This Youth Month (June 2022), this is what Amnesty International South Africa (AISA) highlighted. The government continues to speak about the youth participating in the economy, but before this can happen it needs to focus on fixing the education system. It is our country’s poor education system that largely contributes to the increase in youth unemployment numbers.

If the government wants young people to participate in the economy, quality education is one of the most powerful ways to do so and to give our children a bright future. You can read AISA’s full Youth Day statement here

In this edition of YOU(th) for YOU(th) we explore this theme. We ask our activists what they think the key drivers of youth unemployment are, and what they think the solution is. We also want to know what you think, so leave us your thoughts on the message board.

Also read about the youth parade AISA took part in, in Pretoria, calling on the government to urgently address issues affecting young people, some of the biggest being education and youth unemployment.

The fight for quality education and a bright future for all is a continuous one. We cannot let our guard down and we need to continue to put pressure on the government to ensure that this right is fulfilled. Let us not be afraid to speak out.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Amnesty International South Africa’s youth newsletter and we look forward to engaging with you.

If you have ideas of what you would like to read about, please send us an email with your suggestions to youth@amnesty.org.za.

YOUTH DAY PARADE

Amnesty International South Africa (AISA) collaborated with the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF) and other civil society organisations to commemorate Youth Day on 16 June, and call for the government of South Africa to address the issues facing young people today.

About 50 AISA activists joined in the demonstration held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, to call for change.

The AKF handed over a memorandum to the presidency, which highlighted the need for government to urgently and conclusively:

  • Combat youth unemployment, gender-based violence, climate change, and crime;
  • Put an end to all forms of racism, discrimination, and corruption;
  • Create sustainable and meaningful job opportunities and safe environments for learning and development;
  • Provide free and quality education, healthcare, and service delivery.

AISA used the opportunity to call on young people to take action on the state of education in South Africa as well as on the need for the State to do more in dealing with gender-based violence in the country. About 250 young people took action on the day and many others continue to do so online.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued draft amendments to the Regulations Relating to the Minimum Uniform Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure. These regulations  outline the minimum standards of what school infrastructure should include and look like.

The proposed amendments are as follows:

  • The removal of deadlines, including for the eradication of all illegal pit toilets. The deadlines are what we use to hold the DBE accountable.
  • The removal of what information progress reports must include. This will make it difficult to hold provincial departments accountable.

Amnesty International South Africa came out in support of other organisations such as Equal Education this month, to express outrage at the proposed new changes to the school infrastructure law by the department.

We believe that the changes will negatively affect efforts aimed at ensuring that every child has access to quality education and learns in a safe environment.

In 2020 and 2021 AISA released two reports on the state of Basic Education in South Africa. The reports titled South Africa: Failing to learn the lessons? The impact of COVID-19 on a broken and unequal education system and Broken and Unequal: The state of education in South Africa highlighted stark inequalities in the education system, exposing how the infrastructure of many schools that serve poorer communities do not meet the government’s own “Minimum Norms and Standards” for educational facilities.

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2235″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

GET RID OF THE STINK! ERADICATE PIT TOILETS IN OUR SCHOOLS NOW!

Quality education is one of the most powerful ways to give our children a bright future.

But over a million pupils and teachers are affected by poor sanitation in our schools.

The use of pit toilets not only violates the right to basic sanitation, and access to quality education but also the right to health, dignity and threatens the right to life.

Take action and demand the Department of Basic Education:

  • Immediately provides a clear plan to eradicate pit toilets in 5167 schools across South Africa
  • Provides reliable data and regular updates regarding the number of schools with pit toilets across South Africa
  • Eradication of all pit toilets in schools by the end of February 2023
