YOU(TH) FOR YOU(TH)

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This edition unpacks all the reasons why you should care about the climate crisis and what actions you can take.

In short, climate change is affecting and will continue to affect bread-and-butter issues like access to safe, sufficient and reliable water, food, adequate housing and health.

We witnessed this earlier in the year during the KwaZulu-Natal floods where heavy rainfall caused widespread destruction that led to over 400 people dying; 8,584 houses being destroyed, and 13,536 houses damaged.

Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape is also facing an extreme weather event – drought. It is close to reaching day zero which means that water sources in the area will be depleted, and taps will run dry.

Although individual events cannot be attributed to climate change alone, scientists believe that extreme weather events across the globe are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.

So, it’s time we equip ourselves with the knowledge on how to fight the climate crisis to protect ourselves and future generations from its devastating impacts. To help, Amnesty International South Africa, has developed a short course on climate change, with a focus on learning more about the complex relationship between climate change and access to water.

Young people in South Africa and around the world are leading the fight against the climate crisis. We salute you and acknowledge the courage it takes to stand up against governments and corporations putting profit before people.

In this edition we also talk about the right to protest and Amnesty’s global flagship campaign Protect the Protest.

Also read about our partnership with True Love magazine which is shining a light of early pregnancy in South Africa.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Amnesty International South Africa’s youth newsletter, and we look forward to engaging with you.

If you have ideas of what you would like to read about, please send us an email with your suggestions to youth@amnesty.org.za

Amnesty International South Africa launched its climate change campaign, #IAmClimateAction on 5 July 2022, which aims to increase climate literacy among young people to ensure every person in South Africa has the knowledge to hold the relevant government players accountable to their commitments to uphold the right to water in the face of the climate crisis.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE.

Thousands of people in South Africa are already suffering from the catastrophic effects of extreme weather disasters that are being exacerbated by climate change – from prolonged drought in Nelson Mandela Bay to the deadly floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

While we largely understand climate change through the impacts it will have on our natural world, it is the devastation that it is causing and will continue to cause for humanity that make it an urgent human rights issue. Its effects will continue to grow and worsen over time, creating ruin for current and future generations.

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”6854″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Amnesty is calling for governments to:

-Do everything they can to help stop the global temperature rising by more than 1.5°C.

-Collectively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to absolute zero before or by 2050. Richer countries should do this faster. By 2030, global emissions must be half as much as they were in 2010.

-Stop using and producing fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) as quickly as possible.

-Make sure that climate action is done in a way that does not violate anyone’s human rights, and reduces rather than increases inequality

-Make sure everyone, in particular those affected by climate change or the transition to a fossil-free economy, is properly informed about what is happening and is able to participate in decisions about their futures.

-Work together to fairly share the burden of climate change – richer countries must provide financial and technical support to people in developing countries who have suffered and will continue to suffer losses and damages caused by the climate crisis.

-Governments must put measures in place to increase climate literacy across society.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_btn title=”Take Action Here” style=”custom” custom_background=”#000000″ custom_text=”#ffff00″ size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famnesty.org.za%2Fcampaigns-page%2Fclimate-change-page%2F” el_class=”amnesty-button large-heading”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1656661678579{padding-bottom: 30px !important;background-color: #ededed !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text el_class=”large-heading”]

PROTECT THE PROTEST

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

The right to protest is under unprecedented and growing threat across all regions of the world, Amnesty International said, as it launched a new global campaign, “Protect the Protest” on 19 July.

A range of issues including the environmental crisis, growing inequality and threats to livelihoods, systemic racism and gender-based violence have made collective action ever more necessary.

Governments have responded by introducing legislation imposing illegitimate restrictions on the right to protest.

LEARN MORE

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Amnesty International has developed a free online course on Police and Human Rights.

The course is designed for researchers, campaigners and activists working on police and human rights. The course will give you a basic understanding of the international human rights laws and standards applicable in law enforcement. Through exercises, Amnesty research material, videos, and self-directed learning resources, learners will take a detailed look at a wide range of topics related to police and human rights.

Each module will take approximately one hour to complete. If you have more time and are interested in learning more – there are additional links to follow. This is a self-paced course so you can take it at your own pace. This course contains sensitive material that some learners may find distressing.

By the end of the first four modules, learners will know the fundamental human rights principles governing police work; and they will have learned when police can use force (and when not), including the rules that should govern the use of different weapons, and how human rights compliant policing of protests should look like.

By October 2022, an additional set of modules will be online and cover the following topics: Arrest and detention, Torture and ill-treatment, Accountability, Counter-terrorism, and Discrimination.

#REALMATERNITYISSUE

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”6876″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

EARLY PREGNANCY IN SOUTH AFRICA IS A CRISIS

Amnesty International South Africa and True Love magazine are shining a light on the crisis that is early pregnancy, #RealMaternityIssue. It is a social, health and economic issue affecting our most precious resource: our children

In South Africa, between April 2017 and September 2021, the number of births to young and adolescent girls between 10 and 14 years of age increased by 48.7%.

Further, of the 1,764 babies born in South Africa on 1 January 2022, 65 were born to adolescent girls. The youngest was a 13-year-old from the Eastern Cape.

The increase in adolescent childbearing is a cause for concern. Most of these girls are forced to drop out of school or fall behind with their schoolwork. They can then become trapped in a cycle of poverty, leaving them dependent on public assistance, suffering the stigma of being pregnant and giving birth at a young age, or being forced into early marriages.

This is an issue that needs to be addressed by society and the government, but ultimately, the state has a responsibility to create an enabling environment for every person to make autonomous and informed decisions.
