YOU(TH) FOR YOU(TH)

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]With so much happening in the world around us, this month we are focusing on global solidarity.

Global solidarity is an important part of defending human rights. If we look back at South Africa’s dark past of apartheid, global solidarity during the liberation struggle played an important role in helping to dismantle the oppressive system.

With the help of global solidarity, through Amnesty International’s Write for Rights campaign, we were able to get the police to reinvestigate the case of Popi Qwabe and Bongeka Phungula, two young women brutally killed in 2017. Over 341,000 Amnesty supporters signed the petition to demand this. The matter is now with the National Prosecuting Authority, bringing their families one step closer to justice.

Just as global solidarity was important then, it is important now. It is now our time as South Africa to also stand up and show global solidarity with other countries. We focus this issue on what is happening in Israel/Palestine and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

A quote from Martin Niemöller, a German pastor who spoke out against Adolf Hitler during WWII, captures the importance of global solidarity:

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

We hope you enjoy this edition of Amnesty International South Africa’s youth newsletter and we look forward to engaging with you.

If you have ideas of what you would like to read about, please send us an email with your suggestions to youth@amnesty.org.za.

On 1 February 2022, Amnesty International released its report, Israel’s Apartheid against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crime against Humanity. The comprehensive report sets out how massive seizures of Palestinian land and property, unlawful killings, forcible transfer, drastic movement restrictions, and the denial of nationality and citizenship to Palestinians are all components of a system that amounts to apartheid under international law. This system is maintained by violations that Amnesty International found to constitute apartheid as a crime against humanity, as defined in the Rome Statute and Apartheid Convention.

Amnesty International’s head of the Jerusalem office, Saleh Hijazi was in South Africa last month meeting with solidarity groups and South African government officials. Hijazi was one of the researchers and main authors of the report. He is himself a Palestinian with on the ground experience of what is happening.

Amnesty International South Africa activist Noor Ahmad interviewed Saleh about the report and his experiences.

Invasion of Ukraine is an act of aggression and human rights catastrophe

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]

The invasion has triggered a huge human rights, humanitarian, & displacement crisis that has the makings of the worst such catastrophe in recent European history. Russia is breaching the sovereignty of Ukraine & challenging the global security architecture.

Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International

The people of Ukraine are facing a catastrophic human rights crisis, but we have power in numbers to call for this to stop.
We must unite to help protect the people of Ukraine.

Send an email to the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation and demand that
Russia ends the aggression immediately, protects civilians and respects international law.

TAKE ACTION

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Millions of Palestinians live under Israel’s system of apartheid, and at the heart of this violently racist system, is the Palestinian experience of being denied a home.

For over 73 years, Israel has forcibly displaced entire Palestinian communities and demolished hundreds of thousands of Palestinians’ homes causing terrible trauma & suffering. Over 6 million Palestinians remain as refugees and today at least another 150,000 are at real risk of losing their homes.

Israel has created and maintains laws, policies, and practices that deliberately oppress Palestinians and work to ensure Jewish Israeli domination across Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). This includes racist seizures of property and planning laws and policies that make it impossible for many Palestinians to build homes. It also allows for mass demolitions of homes built without a permit, something that is routinely denied for Palestinians.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Apartheid is a crime against humanity and is committed with the specific intent of maintaining a cruel system of control by one racial group over another. Every week, the Israeli authorities displace Palestinians through demolitions or forced evictions, which shows how Israel deliberately disadvantages Palestinians, giving them inferior status to Israeli Jews.

With more stories coming to light and more people around the world mobilising against these injustices, now is the time for us to work together. As a first step, we must speak out for Palestinians living under Israel’s apartheid. We have the power to demolish this system even if it means one pillar at a time.

Take action against demolitions and forced evictions now by writing to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

Call on him to immediately cancel all orders for forced evictions and home demolitions against Palestinians in Israel/OPT and to end the forced displacement of Palestinians.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_btn title=”Take Action Here” style=”custom” custom_background=”#000000″ custom_text=”#ffff00″ align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famnesty.org.za%2Faction%2Fdemolish-apartheid-not-palestinian-homes%2F” el_class=”amnesty-button large-heading”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1646406051970{padding-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

#EndIsraeliApartheid

Campaign locationSouth Africa

Amnesty International’s new investigation shows that the Israeli government imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the OPT, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law.
