World Health Day 2019: The Right to Health

South Africa’s Constitution enshrines the Right to Health and South Africa is party to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), which further focuses on the Right to Health in Article 12.

In 2018, Amnesty International South Africa made a submission to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: 64th Session, 24 September – 12 October 2018, which focused on two areas: the right to adequate housing and the right to health in relation to Articles 11 and 12 of the Covenant. This submission also acknowledges the progress that has been made in improving access to social, economic and cultural rights in South Africa since 1994. However, persistent inequalities remain and this is not an exhaustive account of the organization’s concerns.
