Human Rights Education Consultant

JOB PURPOSE

The consultant will develop a range of HRE materials on the rights to freedom of expression, access to information and the role of journalists in democracy and as human rights defenders (HRDs), couching this within international human rights law and domestic legislation. The consultant will ensure that the materials not only align with HRE needs but also align with AISA’s values. The consultant will provide additional support to the HRE programme as and when needed.

SCOPE OF WORK:

In-Person Training Materials

Creating accessible training materials on the right to freedom of expression, including access to information and the role journalists play in democracy and human rights, in line with domestic and international human rights law. This training will target journalists, human rights defenders (HRDs), and public participants in South Africa. These resources will be developed for in-person training, ensuring practical application and real-world relevance.

Human Rights Education Online Module Development:

Designing an online module on freedom
of expression and the role of journalists as HRDs, ensuring alignment with AISA’s existing educational platform. Content should be tailored to engage diverse audiences, aimed at increasing knowledge and public support for the important role of journalists.

Deliverables

  • Comprehensive in-person training materials for in-person workshops, including presentation decks, participant handouts, and facilitator guides.
  • A completed online human rights education module, ready for deployment on AISA’s HRE platform.
  • Baseline and endline surveys for the offline workshop and online module measuring knowledge gained.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated expertise in online and/or offline human rights education, ideally with a focus on freedom of expression.
  • Proven experience in developing educational content for diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with HRE training environments and trends in South Africa.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Knowledge of and an ability to translate learning materials to a local language (desired).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • For the duration of the consultancy, the consultant would be expected to work from the office three days a week and remotely for the remaining two days.
  • Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview, in which case they consent to the verification of their qualifications, background checks and a short test to assess the suitability of a candidate.
  • The successful candidate will be informed by March 2025 and is expected to attend AISA’s HRE induction.

Research, Campaigns and Communication Assistant (RCCA)

JOB PURPOSE

To assist in the development and implementation of AISA’s research, campaigning, and communication strategies including by monitoring social and political developments related to human rights; drafting and assisting in the production of documents; participating in the coordination of the work of the team; and providing support including in relation to field work and in response to crises.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support AISA’s campaigning activities by contributing to the development of campaign strategies, drafting advocacy letters, briefings and other campaigning outputs, assisting with the management of communications with stakeholders, and assisting with the planning, organisation, and coordination of campaign related activities.
  • Assist AISA’s research activities by gathering and managing human rights-related information, assisting with coding and analysing research data, finding effective ways to communicate data, assisting with information management, and transcribing research interviews.
  • Assist with research, campaigning and communication through the production and distribution of public and internal reports, briefings, factsheets, submissions, letters, press releases, annual report, op-eds, campaigning materials and other identified outputs, including drafting, formatting, editing/proof-reading, and, where appropriate, coordinating the translation of documents.
  • Monitor and maintain a broad overview of relevant social, political and human rights developments.
  • Participate in the planning, organisation, and coordination of field research and other relevant AI missions and travel and campaign activities, including preparing budgets, providing logistical support and solving problems, information-gathering, fact-finding and analysis.
  • Contribute to the team’s response during a crisis or unexpected work.
  • Conduct media interviews as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of programme-wide strategies and plans for research, campaigning and growth and provide input into internal discussions on AISA’s mission, policy and organisational issues in order to increase the effectiveness of AISA’s work.

andidate will be pursuing or recently completed a degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field. You will have experience with design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite), an understanding of sales strategies, customer engagement, and promotional techniques, and the ability to conduct thorough and focused desktop research, analyse trends, and present actionable insights. 

what does success look like in this role?

  •  A successful RCCA will have supported the production of research, advocacy and campaigning outputs necessary for successful campaigning, through practicing rigorous analysis, drafting high quality outputs for internal and external use, and effectively representing AISA and communicating its key messages.
  • They will have contributed to and facilitated the development and implementation of research and campaigning strategies in the team’s brief.
  • Success would also involve developing and maintaining effective administrative and communications systems where information directly relevant to the team’s research, campaigning or growth activities is properly gathered and easily retrievable and usable. 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A degree in social sciences, law, development, human rights, or any other related field
  • Minimum 2 years of human rights or social sciences research or related work
  • Excellent written skills
  • Ability to think critically and innovatively
  • General knowledge of South Africa and international relations
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Understanding of and commitment to human rights issues
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collectively
  • Understanding of equal opportunities, cultural, diversity and gender issues as well as a commitment to apply relevant policies
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
