DEMAND HABITABLE HOUSING FOR RESIDENTS OF INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS

Every rainy season, millions of people in South Africa living in informal settlements brace for floods that can destroy their homes, their belongings and their sense of safety. This is not inevitable. It is a failure of the government to deliver on the right to have access to adequate housing.

The right to have access to adequate housing includes habitability. This is the legal standard that says your home must protect you from rain, cold, and structural danger. For the over five million people living in South Africa, that standard is being violated.

Call on the Minister of Human Settlements to act with urgency to ensure the right to have access to adequate housing is realised.
